William loves having a bedtime story read to him at night, but when his baby brother comes along his Mom and Dad are busy all the time. He decides to go in search of a new home, but soon discovers that it's not easy to find somewhere that's just right for him and his book: the ducklings' lake is too wet; Little Mouse's mouse hole is too small; Little Wolf's cave is too dark; and although Owl loves reading, his nest is much too high. As night draws in, there's only one place he wants to be.
